Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille on Penalties to Secure Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match featuring the French league winners and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side fired two times late to seize a surprise advantage. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to send the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 shootout win.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the past 13 seasons.
